Water Pollution in Lake Champlain, Georgia-Pacific Mill 1964

Back in 1964, water pollution was much less regulated in New York State, and waste water from the toilet paper making process was dumped directly into Lake Champlain, leaving the area around Wilcox Dock looking very white in color on this Spring 1964 aerial photo.

Dannemora Mountain Haul Road Trails

Just north of Dannemora, as you climb Dannemora Mountain on NY 374, there is a pull off with a water fountain that is popular for tourists and locals seeking a source of good spring water. From there are several old haul road trails that you can hike along on Dannemora Mountain, a previously logged area that once supplied the wood used in the wood furnaces that heated Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora. At one time, the state brought prisoners up here to log the area, and provide heat for their facility. The mixed cover is good for wildlife viewing and hunting in this remote, little visited portion of the Northern Adirondacks.

Lake Alice

The primary purposes of Lake Alice Wildlife Management Area (WMA) are for wildlife management, wildlife habitat management, and wildlife-dependent recreation. The area encompasses 1,468 acres. The principal portions of this management area were acquired in two stages from the William H. Miner Foundation-648 acres in 1953 and 750 acres in 1970. Prior to state ownership, the area was primarily used for agriculture and timber harvesting. In addition, water control structures were built along Tracy Brook to generate hydro-electric power. This mosaic of cropland, woodland, and impounded open water provided an ideal base upon which to establish a wildlife management area. https://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/24410.html
